Foxwoods casino tower will no longer carry MGM Grand name

MASHANTUCKET, Conn. — A casino tower at Foxwoods will no longer carry the name MGM Grand.

The Mashantucket Pequot tribe that owns the Foxwoods Resort Casino and MGM Resorts International have announced an end to their licensing agreement.

MGM spokesman Clark Dumont says the company was worried about consumer confusion as the Las Vegas-based company pursues a bid to build its own casino in Springfield, Mass.

Foxwoods President and CEO Scott Butera says the renaming of the tower is part of a campaign to reinvigorate the Foxwoods brand that will include improvements to the property.

The licensing agreement was signed in 2006 as MGM was looking to increase its brand awareness on the East Coast. The tower bearing its name opened in 2008 at a cost of $700 million.
