RENO — A Reno police sergeant who sold a gun to a mentally ill 19-year-old man has been demoted to officer.

Deputy Police Chief Tom Robinson confirmed the demotion of Laura Conklin on Friday, according to the Reno Gazette-Journal.

Robinson said the department’s internal investigation into the July gun sale is ongoing.

A judge earlier had adjudicated the young man as mentally incompetent to care for himself, making it illegal for him to have a weapon.

Conklin’s lawyer Thomas Viloria said Conklin was promoted to sergeant on Aug. 10. The promotion comes with a one-year probationary period and she was awaiting final confirmation.

Viloria said Conklin was told Wednesday that she was not confirmed, though no reason was provided.
