Q What can I take for a cold when I am pregnant?
A Generally, topical medications can be used throughout the whole pregnancy. These are the nose strips, Vicks Vapor Rub and the cough lozenges. After the 13th week, one can generally take most over-the-counter medications that do not contain alcohol (Nyquil does contain alcohol), as long as it is within the recommended doses stated on the label (Robitussin is a common cold medication that we recommend). One should avoid medications that contain aspirin. Nasal sprays can be used throughout the pregnancy but taken only as directed, and do not take more than the recommended dose.
