Finding Love Later in Life

Jim Cheek, 68, and Mildred "Millie" Slaymaker, 69, exchanged vows during a Feb. 13 wedding at Pacific Pines I Senior Apartments. The couple met at Pacific Pines I Senior Apartments when the community first opened in 2005. Jim's first wife, also named Millie, died last year. Since then he and Millie Slaymaker have become closer friends, but she didn't see the proposal coming. "All of a sudden he got down on one knee and said, 'Will you marry me?' and I said, 'Sure,' " Slaymaker said. The ceremony was performed in Pacific Pines I Community Room at 132 E. Pacific Ave. in Henderson. Nevada HAND (housing and urban development) gifted the newlyweds their wedding cake and refreshments. The property manager and assistant manager at Pacific Pines I served as maids of honor, and a property manager at another Nevada HAND senior community was brought in as best man.
