Few courts comply with gun law; Clark County an exception

Northern Nevada courts are failing to comply with a new state gun-ban notification law, a Reno Gazette-Journal investigation found.

The law requires all state courts to send records of people deemed by a judge to have a mental illness to the Nevada Department of Public Safety so they can be added to a national database of those prohibited from possessing firearms. But few Nevada courts have complied with the law since it took effect Jan. 1, 2010 .

Julie Butler, chief of records for the Department of Public Safety, said that as of mid-November, it had only received data from two state courts. Clark County District Court sent 472 names and White Pine County sent four.
