Carson City driver had high level of meth in his system

CARSON CITY -- A Nevada Highway Patrol report says a Carson City man who died in an April traffic accident along with his two young children had a high level of methamphetamine in his system at the time.

The Nevada Appeal of Carson City said the report concludes 30-year-old David Melendrez was under the influence of a controlled substance when his car crossed the center line on U.S. 50 in Mound House. It sideswiped one oncoming vehicle and collided head-on with another.

His two children, 8-year-old Alexis and 3-year-old Colton, died within days in the hospital.

The report also says Melendrez had two prior DUI convictions.
