HIKES

Red Rock Canyon: On Monday, take a moderate, 3- to 6-mile hike around White Rock Loop; for ages 12 and older. On Tuesday, watch the moon pass across the sky on a moderate, 3-mile night hike on the Calico I trail; for ages 12 and older. On Saturday, search for fossils and wildflowers on an easy-to-moderate, 3-mile hike along Fossil Ridge; for ages 6 and older. On Sept. 11, look for wildflowers on an easy-to-moderate, 3-mile hike at First Creek.

Mount Charleston: On Friday, see quaking aspen, white fir and bristlecone pine trees on a moderate, 6-mile hike on the Bristlecone Loop Trail; for ages 15 and older.

Around the Bend Friends: This group of people 50 and older who are involved in hiking and related social activities plans several hikes each week of various difficulty levels, including an easy-to-moderate social hike on Saturdays. OTHER PROGRAMS

Red Rock Canyon: On Monday, participate in a geological field trip around the Scenic Drive; for ages 10 and older. On Wednesday, learn about the birds of Red Rock in a tabletop presentation from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Visitor Center. On Friday, help clean up a trail. Also on Friday, presentations on hiking and trail safety will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Visitor Center classroom. On Saturday, kids ages 2 to 7 can learn about birds and how they use their beaks. On Sept. 11, learn facts about the animals of Red Rock in a tabletop presentation from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Visitor Center.

Archaeo-Nevada Society, along with the Bureau of Land Management, seeks volunteers to help with Red Rock Canyon conservation projects. Visit www.archaeonevada.org.

Nevada State Parks is hosting a Leave No Trace trainers' course Sept. 24 and 25 at Valley of Fire State Park. This course, which includes one night of camping, promotes skills and ethics to support the sustainable use of wild lands and natural areas and will certify participants as trainers in "leave no trace" ethics.
