Startup media group buys third rural Nevada newspaper

A startup media group led by the Review-Journal's former publisher has purchased a third rural Nevada newspaper.

Battle Born Media said Monday that it bought the Mineral County Independent News, a weekly newspaper serving the western Nevada town of Hawthorne.

Brothers Ted, Tony and Frank Hughes sold the paper, which they'd owned since 1994.

"Taking the journalistic helm of the Hawthorne newspaper from the Hughes brothers is a pleasure and a privilege," said Sherman Frederick, a cofounder of Battle Born Media and a past publisher of the Review-Journal.

Battle Born announced last week that it bought the Ely Times and the Eureka Sentinel from Review-Journal parent company Stephens Media.

Frederick said the company is looking to purchase other newspapers.
