The Countdown Begins

Get ready to fire the engines.

The AMA Supercross season for two-wheels started last Saturday in Anaheim, Calif., and continues Saturday in Phoenix. The SCORE desert racers will compete Saturday and Sunday in Laughlin.

But the big koogabalooga, as a good friend would say, gets under way next weekend when NASCAR Sprint Cup teams in mass test the newly repaved Daytona International Speedway’s 2.5-mile oval.

A few teams were able to complete a tire test at Daytona in late December. A few observations were that the track was extremely smooth and that made it faster than recent years.

As a result, RacinToday.com says that NASCAR reportedly will downsize restrictor plate holes for next week’s Daytona test.

The popular website says the new size will be 29/32 of an inch instead of the former 30/32 of an inch. That should slow the cars down a bit because it will slightly drop horsepower.

HIT THE LVMS TRACK

You can drive on the 1.5-mile oval at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Jan. 30 and help many local charities in the process.

The Las Vegas Chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities is inviting you to drive your personal vehicle on the track to raise money for the organization.

The Laps for Charity is from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the last Sunday in January. It will cost each vehicle $30 and a pace car will lead all with speeds reaching up to 75 mph. For an additional $10, fans can take their photo in LVMS victory lane.

Making a difference in a child's life is the focus of Speedway Children's Charities. SCC strives to do this in collaboration with nonprofit organizations that help kids. Last December, the Las Vegas Chapter of Speedway Children's Charities granted $255,000 to 44 local children's causes during its annual grant distribution ceremony.

Sounds like a fun time to help a great organization.
