NV Energy willing to pay businesses for fire

NV Energy says it's not to blame for a July explosion in downtown Las Vegas that gutted a thrift store and damaged nearby businesses.

The utility company said Monday it can prove the explosion happened because of a gas leak but officials say they're willing to pay for financial losses not covered by insurance. KVBC-TV reports that NV Energy hired an engineering and consulting firm to examine physical evidence to determine how the accident happened.

Fire investigators were unable to determine whether a gas leak or explosion happened first.

Opportunity Village is the thrift store that was gutted. Officials there say they have been able to collect insurance money but they haven't figured out what their total losses are.
