Summerlin fills community calendar with 2010 events

The master-planned community of Summerlin is preparing for more than two dozen public and private resident events to be held this year.

Those events include the second annual Adventure Days, a spring promotion designed to highlight Summerlin's amenities and healthy outdoor lifestyle marked by two popular events -- Tour de Summerlin and Mad Mud Run. Other events include Red Rock Day at Red Rock Canyon and other environmentally-focused events, one of Nevada's largest Fourth of July Parade, The Summerlin Council Patriotic Parade, America's Biggest Open House, weekly farmers markets and dozens of events surrounding Summerlin's 20th anniversary celebration.

"Despite a slower development pace than in years past, Summerlin remained a very active and vibrant community in 2009," said Kevin Orrock, top division executive for The Howard Hughes Corp., developer of Summerlin. "Our 2010 calendar will be equally impressive with dozens of events designed to tout Summerlin's active and desirable Summerlin lifestyle."

The Summerlin Council, the nonprofit arm of the Summerlin Community Association dedicated to the social, recreational, cultural and educational enrichment of residents, also is filling the 2010 calendar with several resident-only events. These include Snow Day, Pumpkin Festival, Friday Night Lights outdoor summer concert series and Hometown Holidays.

"These resident activities and events have played a significant role in creating a true sense of community in Summerlin since the community's inception nearly 20 years ago," Orrock said.

Developed by The Howard Hughes Corp., an affiliate of General Growth Properties Inc., Summerlin began to take shape in 1990.

Located along the western rim of the Las Vegas Valley, Summerlin encompasses 22,500 acres with 9,000 still remaining to accommodate future growth within the master plan, including the community's urban core of Summerlin Centre. There are more than 95,000 residents with access to amenities that include more than 150 neighborhood and village parks, more than 150 completed miles of the Summerlin trail system, nine golf courses, a dozen houses of worship, shopping centers, medical and cultural facilities, business parks, 25 public and private schools.

Homes are available in a variety of styles -- from single-family homes to townhomes, condominiums and lofts -- priced from the mid $200,000s to more than $2 million. Custom-home sites in The Ridges are priced from the $500,000s. Luxury apartment homes offer monthly rents starting from the $900s.
