Officers involved in shootout at a Las Vegas fire identified

Las Vegas police identified the four officers involved in this week's shootout that left a suspect dead as veterans of the department with several years of service.

The officers who fired at the suspect were 39-year-old Gregory Hazen, a nine-year veteran; 37-year-old Steve Tsapatoris, an 11-year veteran; 41-year-old Sgt. Harry Fagel, a 15-year veteran; and 60-year-old Sgt. Frank Soto, a 16-year veteran.

Soto was wounded in the shoulder and back during the Wednesday gun battle, at 1230 Comstock Drive, near Martin Luther King Boulevard and Washington Avenue. He had minor injuries and was treated and released the same day.

Firefighters were called to the scene about 12:30 p.m. because the house was on fire. They were almost immediately besieged by gunfire, authorities said. Two fire trucks carrying four firefighters each were struck multiple times with shotgun blasts.

When officers arrived, they shot and killed 36-year-old Bryan Benjamin Hanasz, whose mother owned the home. Firefighters returned to the scene to extinguish the blaze.

None of the firefighters was injured.
