Talk about a captive audience

A Las Vegas casino owner has plans to convert a small hotel-casino into a residential property with slot machines, table games and a sports book.

Stephen Siegel, owner of the Gold Spike in downtown Las Vegas, recently bought the Barcelona Hotel and Casino and plans to convert the hotel units to weekly and monthly rental apartments.

Siegel says he bought the Barcelona for $12 million. The Barcelona already offers a full array of casino slot and table games.

He plans to contract with gaming operator United Coin to run the casino until he receives a Nevada license. United Coin already operates the casino portion of the Gold Spike.

By converting the hotel to residential units and incorporating the gas station and convenience store that's on the same site, Siegel will have an opportunity to keep customers who want to gamble, buy groceries, fill their gas tanks and have living accommodations all on one property.
