Caesars Palace shooter sentenced to prison

The man who shot and wounded two people at Caesars Palace a year ago was sentenced to three years to 16 years in prison Friday.

District Judge Donald Mosley sentenced Richard Shepherd, 35, who in July pleaded guilty to one count of attempted murder with a deadly weapon.

"We're pretty happy with it and think it's fair," said Scott Holper, Shepherd's attorney.

Shepherd is accused of shooting and wounding Vance Davis and Markael Ballou on Aug. 4, 2007 in an incident that was caught on casino surveillance cameras.

Shepherd said he was sorry for the shooting but said he opened fire only after he got into a fight with several other men at the casino. Two men punched him after making rude comments to his sister outside a Caesars Palace nightclub.

"I do have a lot of remorse in my heart," he said Friday.
