Man shot and killed in dispute with group

A man who confronted a group of men he suspected of robbing him was shot and killed Saturday, Las Vegas police said.

The shooting took place about 9:30 p.m. The man, who was not identified, was reported to be in his late 20s. He arrived at his apartment at 1555 Balzar Ave., near Lake Mead and Martin Luther King boulevards, and found his door had been kicked in and his apartment robbed.

Police said the man suspected a group of three or four men outside his apartment of robbing him. He approached the men, began an argument and was shot, police said.

Boat propeller kills California swimmer

Officials say a 54-year-old California woman who swam behind a boat as it backed up on Lake Mead was killed when she was hit by the propeller.

National Park Service spokeswoman Mary Hinson said witnesses reported seeing Lois Johnson jump into the lake and swim behind the boat Saturday.

She was pulled from the water and Lake Mead rangers met the boat on its way to the shore and provided advanced life support.

Johnson died at a hospital.

Lake Mead is on the Arizona-Nevada line. Johnson was struck on the Arizona side.

Johnson's death is the 14th at Lake Mead National Recreation Area this year.

Body found in alley had been shot in back

A man found dead in an alley this weekend was shot in his back, Las Vegas police said Sunday.

Officers were called to the scene at 497 Kolson Circle, near Twain Avenue and Palos Verdes Street, about 4:30 p.m. Saturday by a man who saw the body from his apartment window.

The man was dead when police arrived. Police did not identify the man who is reported to be between 20 to 30 years old.

Ski resort is last in Colorado shut down

Arapahoe Basin in Georgetown, Colo., became the last Colorado ski resort to shut down for the season Sunday, with some skiers and snowboarders showing up in shorts.

A-Basin was the first Colorado resort to open this season when lifts started running Oct. 10.

The resort got two fresh inches of snow before lifts opened Sunday for closing day, and it reported a base of 34 inches at mid-mountain.

Two of its seven lifts, 20 trails and 200 acres were open.
