Silverado clinches division

Silverado softball coach Victor Pierro constantly talks about this team's hitting depth. On any given day, Pierro says, any given hitter can come through.

On Thursday at Foothill High School in the teams' regular-season finale, it was freshman Taylor Lampela's turn.

Lampela was 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and three runs in the Skyhawks' 8-3 win over the Falcons. Silverado clinched the Southeast Division, finishing 12-2, one game ahead of Green Valley.

Lampela has been on a tear lately after replacing injured Amanda Buchholz in the Silverado lineup, hitting nearly .500 since early April.

And now with Buchholz back -- and going 3-for-3 with three RBIs on Thursday -- the Skyhawks have the best of both worlds.

With Buchholz back at third base, Lampela has shifted to shortstop.

"She's been doing that since she started playing with more regularity," Pierro said of Lampela. "She took over for Buchholz when she got injured, and she was producing so well that we had to find a way to get her in the game."

Against Foothill (18-21, 10-4), Lampela came to bat in the seventh inning with Silverado (20-4) up by three runs. With a runner on second and an 0-and-1 count, Lampela smacked a Shelbie Medrano pitch over the right-field fence, nearly hitting the scoreboard.

"I went up there with a hitter's mentality," Lampela said. "I kinda knew what I was going to do. Today, we were really aggressive, and it makes you want to be more positive."

Added Pierro: "With most freshmen, confidence is going to be an issue -- feeling like they belong. It was good to get her a lot of at-bats with Buchholz down. You could just tell how her confidence is growing a little more with every at-bat."
