THE LIST: DVDs, CDs and books hitting stores this week

DVDS

"Beowulf Director's Cut" (Unrated) The animated flick (using motion capture a la "The Polar Express") from the story that almost every 10th-grader had to read. It got a lot of buzz because of the animated nudity of Angelina Jolie. This version has several featurettes and about 10 minutes of deleted scenes.

Also out today: "The Darjeeling Limited" (R); "Death at a Funeral" (R); "Goya's Ghost" (R); "National Lampoon Presents Jake's Booty Call" (R); "The Last Emperor" (PG-13); "Silk" (R); and "30 Days of Night" (R).

CDS

Janet Jackson, "Discipline": Discipline?

Hmm, Ms. Jackson has shown a curious lack of it on her last couple of disappointing releases, which were rife with stale beats and banal come-ons that pack all the sensuality of a midnight showing of "Porky's."

Once on the cutting edge of contemporary R&B, Jackson has lost her place atop the pop pecking order and is now out to reclaim a bit of her former glory with this hot-under-the-collar disc.

This time, let's hope she steams up some windows instead of just leaving us steamed.

Also in stores: Erykah Badu, "New AmErykah, Pt. One: 4th World War"; Beach House, "Devotion"; China Forbes, "'78"; Melody Gardot, "Worrisome"; Ghostland Observatory, "Robotique Majestique"; Goldfrapp, "Seventh Tree"; Missy Higgins, "On a Clear Night"; Tift Merritt, "Another Country"; Dolly Parton, "Backwoods Barbie"; Punch Brothers, "Punch"; Pete Rock, "NY's Finest"; SSB, "Salvador Santana Band"; and Lizz Wright, "The Orchard."

As Lexi struggles to come to terms with her new life, she learns her success comes with plenty of secrets.
