"Hannibal Rising" (available in R and unrated versions) is a prequel about how one of the most intriguing villains of pop culture, Hannibal Lecter of "The Silence of the Lambs" fame, came to be. Novelist and screenwriter Thomas Harris pieces together a story, and young French actor Gaspard Ulliel takes on the role of Lecter. Unfortunately, the story is no "Lambs," and Ulliel's Lecter is a one-dimensional killer without any of the complexities embodied in Anthony Hopkins' version.
