Chameleons, if not known for their freaky eyes, are known for their ability to change colors.

The color change is used for social signaling and at other times, camouflage. Certain species of chameleons tend to turn darker shades when angered or to intimidate others. However, only males have this ability. Sorry, ladies.

A group of scientists have finally figured out how the color change actually happens, and why.

Researchers at the University of Geneva studied chameleons in Madagascar to unlock how they alter their skin cells to change colors.

And it’s pretty dang cool.
