Arkefly quietly starts service to McCarran
Dutch airline Arkefly began its twice weekly service between McCarran International Airport and Amsterdam on Thursday with uncharacteristic stealth.
McCarran and Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority officials have pushed to attract international traffic, so an inaugural flight normally comes with showgirls, speeches and a plane taxiing to the gate through a water arc shot by fire trucks. Arkefly merely pulled up to Terminal 2 and let passengers off.
According to McCarran spokesman Chris Jones, no Arkefly executives came to stage an event. It may happen at a later date, but nothing has been set.
The arrival of President Barck Obama about two hours, Jones said, was not a factor.
Unlike some other foreign carriers, Arkefly shows little outward interest in selling tickets locally. Its website is in Dutch, with no English translation. The flights will continue until Oct. 11.
