Union Village under way

Union Village LLC and The Valley Health System held a ceremonial groundbreaking on Oct. 8 to kick off construction of one of the world’s first integrated health villages.

Called Union Village, it will offer a hospital complex and health center, residential, entertainment and specialty retail space, a senior retirement community and a civic and cultural arts center integrated into a master-planned community. Construction on the $1.2 billion project began when The Valley Health System broke ground on a 142-bed acute care hospital called Henderson Hospital, its sixth facility in Southern Nevada.

“Union Village will transform the delivery of health care in Southern Nevada. The scope of this facility will serve all ages and provide new and direct access to quality care, improving the lives of countless Nevadans,” said Gov. Brian Sandoval. “Today’s groundbreaking is a symbol of the revitalization of Southern Nevada’s economic picture. As the largest health care project in the world, Union Village moves Nevada in the right direction as we work to become a leader in the global health care industry.”

Henderson Hospital, expected to open in fall 2016, will offer emergency services; inpatient and outpatient surgery; women’s and children’s services, including maternity care; cardiology; ancillary services, including radiology, laboratory, respiratory and inpatient pharmacy; and nursing units for medical/surgical care, intermediate medical care and intensive care.

Union Village also has entered into a letter of intent with another health care provider for a 165-bed sub-acute care facility. Plans regarding additional future developments were also announced, including reaching a purchase and sale agreement with Las Vegas Athletic Club (LVAC) on a 10-acre parcel of land on the north end of the property to construct a 90,000-square foot athletic, fitness and family-orientated exercise facility. Union Village also expects to sign another purchase and sale agreement for a 350-unit townhome development and is interviewing operators to develop senior units, including independent living, assisted living and memory care.

Union Village is expected to generate 17,000 jobs and billions of dollars in tax revenues for the local and state economies.

Financial training

Capital One Financial Corporation and Junior Achievement of Southern Nevada are giving more than 4,000 Clark County students an income, mortgage, family and cable bill at its mock city, Capital One/Junior Achievement Finance Park. It will provide reality-based financial scenarios to 8th- through 12th-grade students through Dec. 18 at the Las Vegas Library.

The 40-day interactive program will be experienced by 75 to 100 students daily, from 16 Clark County schools, operated by 800 volunteers. Students will learn personal financial management, career exploration by classroom instruction and participation in a small-size simulated city.

The message stresses the value of managing finances within a balanced budget and will set a foundation for future fiscal responsibility. These lessons will influence students to seek a prolonged education and increase graduation rates.

“Capital One/Junior Achievement Finance Park is an educational experience greatly needed in Nevada,” said Michelle Jackson, president of Junior Achievement of Southern Nevada. “With Nevada’s educational rank, it is important that younger generations of students learn the financial realities of life.”

The 13 lessons culminate in an all-day exercise. Students apply the principles to a real-life situation involving a job, monthly income, family size, housing cost, grocery bill and leisure spending allowance.
