Councilman pushes for airport name change

Las Vegas councilman Steve Ross continued his crusade to change the name of McCarran International Airport at Tuesday's board meeting of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

Ross had raised the issue in June as well. This time, several other board members suggested putting it on the August agenda to allow a full debate, although nothing was decided.

Even if the board voted in favor of a change, it would only be advisory. The Clark County Board of Commissioners, which oversees the airport, hold the final authority over the name.

Ross expressed concerns that visitors do not associate McCarran with Las Vegas, even though former Sen. Pat McCarran's name has been on the airport for more than 60 years. Calling it Las Vegas International Airport or Las Vegas-McCarran would highlight the location, he said.

Other cities have split on the issue. But Chicago, New York, Paris, Istanbul and San Diego are among cities that have included names of people at their airports.
