Executive snapshot: Smith helps lead BofA efforts in Nevada

George Smith oversees companies that bring in a serious chunk of change.

Aside from being responsible for all aspects of business banking for the Bank of America, including client acquisition, satisfaction, strategy and growing the client base, Smith manages the business banking segment for companies that average sales between $5 million and $50 million.

“As the market president for Nevada, I’m responsible for helping to develop growth plans for Nevada, represent the bank in the community and help lead our charitable giving,” he said. “Last year alone, we awarded more than $2 million in grants to nonprofits throughout Southern Nevada and our employees volunteered more than 14,600 hours with local organizations.”

Smith moved to Las Vegas in 1992 from Los Angeles with his wife, Adela, and two daughters, Adela, now 33, and Jordyn, 27. The 56-year-old felt Las Vegas was a better place to raise a family.

Why did you choose to work at Bank of America?

I got into banking right after graduating Cal State Fullerton, which I attended for both undergrad and grad school, majoring in finance. A lot of banks came to campus looking to hire and I had numerous job offers before I graduated. I chose Bank of America as I could see the opportunity to grow within the company for many years and I was right.

What are some of the ways the banking industry has changed in the past 10 years?

Clearly, over the past 10 years the economic downturn really had an impact on banking as a lot of clients were negatively impacted. It put a lot of strain on the system but I’m proud that we were able to help a lot of longtime clients through these tough times. The aftermath today is that there is a lot more regulatory scrutiny on this industry, which is understandable.

Where could someone find you on a typical Saturday afternoon?

I love to golf and travel and that’s where I spend most of my free time so hopefully that is where you would find me on a Saturday afternoon.

What is your favorite Las Vegas restaurant and why?

My favorite restaurant is Panevino (at 246 Via Antonia Ave.) I’ve been going there since it opened. I go because the food is great, the service is impeccable and they make you feel like you’re at home.

If you won an all-expense paid trip, where would you go?

If it was an all-expense paid trip, I would want a cruise around the world. It would be a great way to see the world in comfort.
