I need just five words to say, ‘I really like the Webbys’
The Webby Awards were handed out in New York last week, and winners' speeches were restricted to just five words.
Nearly all recipients complied with the rule, but some fudged a bit. I think those that can't count should be banned from further competition.
Every finalist had a couple months to craft their winning words of wisdom.
I agree that editing is an art, but crafting a clever message in five words isn't that hard to do.
You can see all the winners' speeches at the Webby Awards site (www.webbyawards.com/ press/speeches.php).
My favorite five-word speech this year is: "Who let the blogs out?" from Best Week Ever (www.bestweekever.tv), winner in the celebrity/fan category.
Others I liked (in no particular order):
• "It pays not to advertise," from Consumer Reports (www.ConsumerReports.org), winner in the Guides/Ratings/Reviews category.
• "Guess we're still in fashion," from Style.com, winner in the Fashion category.
• "The people get the picture," from National Geographic magazine, winner in the Best Home/Welcome Page category.
• "SpongeBob is our sugar daddy," from Nick.com, winner in the Youth category.
• "Me, me, me, me, me," from Steven Colbert, winner of the Person of the Year award.
• "Thanks, in 72-point Helvetica," from Veer-Type City, winner in the Best Use of Typography category.
• "The icing on the cake," from epicurious.com, winner in the Lifestyle category.
• "We enjoy sleeping with you," from Ikea Mattress, winner in the Retail category.
• "The world has turned yellow," from "The Simpsons Movie," winner in the Movie and Film category.
• "Elliot Spitzer, we thank you," from The New York Times (www.nytimes.com), winner in the Newspaper category.
• "No longer a newspaper site," also from The New York Times, winner in the News category.
• "Hey baby, what's your zestimate?" from Zillow.com, winner in the Real Estate category.
• "Where truthiness goes to die," from FactCheckED.org, winner in the Education category.
• "No, Obama is not a Muslim," from FactCheck.org, winner in the Politics category.
• "The Internet is a documentary," from NFB Filmaker in Residence, winner in the documentary: series category.
• "Booya! Sports anytime, anywhere -- ESPN," from ESPN.com, winner in the Sports Mobile category.
