Executive tries anew to take Landry's private
The top executive at the company that owns the downtown Las Vegas Golden Nugget and the one in Laughlin is trying again to take the company private.
Landry's Restaurants Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Tilman Fertitta recently told a special directors committee to begin go-private discussions, a Wednesday filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission said.
As part of the transaction, Houston-based Landry's wholly owned subsidiary, Saltgrass Inc., would be spun off into a separate company.
The committee was formed last month to review strategic alternatives for Landry's, including a possible sale of the company. The board also hired New York-based global investment bank Moelis & Co. as financial adviser.
Fertitta, who owns nearly 56 percent of the company's stock, would acquire all shares of Landry's he does not own; shareholders would receive shares in Saltgrass.
Although Fertitta would also own shares in Saltgrass, he would not own more than the other shareholders' stakes.
The Saltgrass subsidiary operates 42 Saltgrass Steak House restaurants, including one in the Golden Nugget Laughlin.
Weakness seen to last for apartment market
Las Vegas apartment fundamentals will continue to weaken this year as persistent job losses and a supply glut push vacancy levels to historic highs, a third-quarter report from Marcus & Millichap, a real estate investment services company, said.
A stalled economy has forced builders to put some large-scale commercial developments on hold, eliminating about 19,000 construction jobs in the past 12 months and cutting into renter demand.
John Vorsheck, regional manager of Marcus & Millichap in Las Vegas, said sales activity has come to a near standstill.

Credit union recognized on best employers list
AARP on Wednesday said that Nevada Federal Credit Union ranked 14th nationally a list of the Best Employers for Workers over 50.
The credit union is the only Nevada company to get the Best Employer Award in the program's nine-year history.
"NFCU actively pursues hiring experienced, mature workers in their recruiting as well as their benefits offerings," said Debra Moore, spokeswoman for the American Association of Retired Persons.
The credit union also has high retention rates for the industry, she said.
Nevada Federal has $804 million in assets and serves members from the community.
