RECYCLING LEATHER: That Southwest Airlines leather seat you’ve been riding to Reno may someday become a soccer ball.

The Dallas-based airline, the busiest at McCarran International Airport, recently launched its LUV Seat: Repurpose with Purpose program in which the company aims to recycle 43 acres of used leather seat coverings removed from the airline’s Boeing 737-700 jets and a portion of its 737-300 fleet.

When Southwest began its Evolve interior redesign project it replaced its leather seat covers with environmentally friendly materials, reducing the weight of each aircraft by 600 pounds.

The LUV Seat program moved the leather to community programs around the globe. Much of the material is being shipped to Africa, where craftsmen are turning the seat leather into shoes and soccer balls.

A donation to Looptworks, a Portland, Ore., company, will result in the production of limited-edition merchandise that will be part of Southwest’s celebration of the end of the Wright Amendment in Dallas in the fall.

As The Dallas Morning News reports, the Wright Amendment was passed 34 years ago by Congress and restricts nonstop service from Love Field to airports in Texas and eight other states. Congress amended the law in 2006 to allow passengers to connect to cities beyond the Wright Amendment borders.

The leather donations also produce jobs.

An organization called TeamLift will develop a leatherworks training program to teach entrepreneurial skills that will generate money to support a boarding school under construction in Malawi.
