Nevada’s two largest mining companies receive recognition

Nevada's two biggest gold mining companies received recognition for environmental and corporate governance efforts.

The Dow Jones Sustainability World Index named Denver-based Newmont Mining Corp. to its list of 300 companies worldwide that lead the way in safety, environmental stewardship and social responsibility. It's the sixth straight year on the list for Newmont, which joined the index in 2007 as the first gold company.

The index also included Toronto-based Barrick Gold Corp. for the fifth straight year.

The index evaluates more than 2,500 companies on corporate governance, transparency, risk and crisis management, environmental management and performance, community development, energy management, climate change, biodiversity, human resources and safety.

Barrick is also on the Nasdaq Global Sustainability Index, and Newmont was named one of the 100 Best Corporate Citizens in 2011 by Corporate Responsibility Magazine.

Some 40 percent of Newmont's 5.2 million ounces of gold production came in Nevada in 2011. About 3.3 million ounces of Barrick's 7.7 million ounces in 2011 gold production came from Nevada..
