Number of riders on Las Vegas Monorail keeps decreasing

Las Vegas Monorail ridership continues to fall.

During the second quarter, 1.06 million people paid to get on board, a 19 percent drop from one year ago. As a result, ticket revenues, the monorail's primary source of income, fell 18.6 percent, to $4.7 million.

Although ridership has dwindled steadily since 2005, results in the past year were hurt by the May 2011 closure of the Sahara at the north end of the 3.9-mile line. However, ridership dropped 17.6 percent in June compared to the same month last year, even though the Sahara was closed both months.

During the first half of this year, the 2.05 million riders marked a 21 percent drop and revenues fell at the same rate, to $9.3 million.
