Taxpayers can find free filing help this Saturday
March 18, 2009 - 9:00 pm
The Internal Revenue Service and two community groups will help Southern Nevadans with tax preparation on Saturday. To qualify for assistance, taxpayers generally must earn $42,000 or less yearly.
"Because of the economic downturn, many financially distressed taxpayers may be in need of free service. Our Super Saturday service will make it a little easier for people to get that help," IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman said in a statement.
The tax preparation specialists will help taxpayers get quick refunds and in some cases qualify for tax benefits. Participants should bring a valid driver's license or photo identification, Social Security cards for all persons listed on the return, dates of birth for those listed on the returns, W-2 forms and other income statements.
The government also recommends that taxpayers bring a voided check or proof of a bank account so they can get a direct deposit made to their accounts and, if available, a copy of a tax return from last year.
The IRS office in Las Vegas at 110 City Parkway will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
United Way will also help with tax preparation at several locations Saturday: 3890 S. Maryland Parkway, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.; 4505 Maryland Parkway, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; 1625 W. Carey Ave. in North Las Vegas, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and 710 W. Lake Mead Blvd. in North Las Vegas, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
AARP will provide tax-return assistance from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 2650 S. Jones Blvd., and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 5175 E. Tropicana Blvd.
