Man shot, wounded by Las Vegas police

A man was wounded early Sunday morning after exchanging gunfire with police officers near East Bonanza Road and North Maryland Parkway, according to Las Vegas police.

Police received a report about 4 a.m. of a suspicious vehicle parked in the 2100 block of Sunrise Avenue in downtown Las Vegas.

As officers approached the car, they recognized one of the occupants as a suspect in a Dec. 29 armed robbery.

The people drove off in the vehicle and led police to another location in the 600 block of North 12th Street.

A man and woman got out of the car and ran in different directions.

As officers tried to take the suspects into custody, the man began shooting at officers with a handgun, police said.

One officer shot the suspect, police said.

The man was transported to a hospital in critical condition. The woman was apprehended nearby without incident.

No other injuries were reported.

The officer's identity will be released 48 hours after the shooting, per department policy.

A police spokesman said Sunday night that identities of suspects are being withheld to avoid compromising the armed robbery investigation. The spokesman said he didn't have an updated condition on the injured man.
