Scared chihuahua rescued from busy freeway
The California Highway Patrol was getting attention Monday after rescuing a tiny chihuahua off a Bay Area freeway median over the weekend.
A photo tweeted Saturday by the CHP Contra Costa division showed an officer on I-680 in Walnut Creek using a protein bar to try to attract the little dog.
“This little dog needed some help off I-680 freeway today,” CHP tweeted. “We’re glad he’s safe.”
Since the officer and his partner were on bikes, they called animal control to get the dog, who was taken to Contra Costa Animal Services to recuperate. The shelter posted an update Sunday night on the condition of the dog.
“She was obviously very scared because of her ordeal, but is starting to relax and come out of her shell,” the shelter posted on Facebook. Today on Mother’s day, two of our wonderful kennel technicians spent their lunch socializing her and helping her overcome her fear.”
The shelter said the puppy, who didn’t appear to have been physically harmed during the ordeal, already had a new home if her owner didn’t pick her up.
CHP told NBC Bay Area the dog was likely the victim of a highway dump.
