Nevada Supreme Court looking at medical marijuana law ruling

Nevada’s Supreme Court has taken up an appeal of a judge’s decision to declare the state’s medical marijuana law unconstitutional. The high court last week asked for a full briefing by Clark County prosecutors and defense attorneys about the law, which District Judge Donald Mosley called ” absurd” and “ridiculous.”

Government says Instant Tax Service franchisees filed fraudulent returns

The Justice Department has filed lawsuits in five cities, including Las Vegas, seeking injunctions against the company that operates Instant Tax Service and against five franchise owners. The complaints allege ITS Financial franchisees file fraudulent tax returns to maximize customers’ refunds and extract large fees from customers’ refund checks.

Kosher meal deal reached with Orthodox Jewish inmate

The Nevada Department of Corrections has reached an agreement with an Orthodox Jewish inmate who claimed prison officials were refusing to serve him kosher meals. Corrections officials agreed to obtain rabbinic kosher certification of food prepared for class members “and demonstrate an ability to maintain such certification.”

Reno attorney Du confirmed as federal judge

Miranda Du, who arrived in the United States as a Vietnamese refugee when she was a youngster and who eventually became partner in a Reno law firm, was confirmed as a federal judge for Nevada on Wednesday. The U.S. Senate voted 59-39 to approve Du, 42, to the lifetime appointment.
