Summerlin welcomes PGA professionals for Las Vegas tournament

As the home of Nevada's only two Tournament Players Club courses and seven other golf courses, Summerlin has long been known as a golfer's paradise. Now the golf world's eyes will again shift to Summerlin when the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open takes center stage at TPC Summerlin on Monday through Oct. 25. Founded in 1983, the tournament was held at various local golf courses, before moving to its current location in 1992.

"Golf is an important amenity in Summerlin, and the association we enjoy with the PGA and many of the world's top golfers further enhances the community's image as a golf haven," said Kevin Orrock, president of Summerlin. "Summerlin is proud to once again host such a prestigious sporting event."

Ben Martin notched his first career PGA Tour victory at the 2014 tournament. Tiger Woods also had his first professional win at the tournament in 1996.

Open for viewing by the general public, this year's tournament brings 144 PGA Tour professionals to the green, all vying for a $6.4 million purse. The winner's share is $1.152 million but, the tournament will also bring thousands of dollars to support the charity for which it is named.

"The Shriners Hospitals for Children Open supports the hospitals' mission to provide innovative pediatric specialty care, world-class research and outstanding medical education regardless of a family's ability to pay," said Patrick Lindsey, Shriners Hospitals for Children Open tournament director. "Our 22 locations in the United States, Canada and Mexico provide advanced care for children with orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate. We are thrilled to have a world-class golf facility right here in Summerlin to host this fundraising event year after year."

The par-71, 7,223-yard TPC Summerlin course was designed by Bobby Weed and player consultant Fuzzy Zoeller. TPC Summerlin has been honored by Golf Digest as one of "America's Best" golf courses, and the course has been ranked as one of the "Top 100 Modern Golf Courses in the United States." The private, members-only facility is currently undergoing a multimillion-dollar renovation to its state-of-the-art stadium seating tennis court and will add a lifestyle center with fitness training machines, spa facilities and a family-friendly swimming pool.
