Bordeaux’s 2005 vintage impresses

One of the greatest vintages of all time is the 2005 vintage in Bordeaux. Although most of the wines have not been released, we are fortunate to have a sneak peek through Chateau du Bois Chantant.

Vineyard magnate Bernard Magrez, whose holdings encompass 21 properties in the Bordeaux region of France and 11 other properties throughout the world, is the man behind wine.

He does everything right, from the vine to the first class packaging. And, for less than $10, this wine is fully on par with much more expensive wines from any region.

In the glass, Chateau du Bois Chantant is a deep, semi-opaque ruby-red color with a dense core going out into a firm blood-red rim definition with medium-high viscosity.

On the nose, this wine exudes classic Bordeaux characteristics with creme de cassis, loganberry juice and mint leaf. There also is a lively freshness of crushed black fruits, black currant pastilles, black cherry sorbet, violets and subtle oak references.

On the palate, it is easily distinguishable from a New World wine, showing tremendous complexity and breed with classic black currant characteristics, crushed brambleberries, ripe red cherries and earthy minerals. The midpalate is well-balanced with good soft tannins that are in harmony with the fruit and the oak. The finish on this well-made wine is really lovely and supple with good amounts of black fruit and herb-laced minerals, as well as hints of cherry jam.

Chateau du Bois Chantant needs to breathe for at least 30 minutes before it will open up completely. Alternatively it can be decanted before serving, which always makes for a nice presentation. Try it with classic filet mignon with bearnaise sauce and potatoes. It will drink well through 2010.
