DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES IS WEDNESDAY

Volunteer Center seeks nominations for Community Enrichment Awards

The Volunteer Center of Southern Nevada is accepting nominations for Community Enrichment Awards for outstanding volunteer service.

Awards will be presented in five categories: education, group, individual adult, senior and youth. Nominations may be submitted by an individual, group or organization.

Faith-based, fraternal or professional groups may nominate their members so long as the beneficiaries of their services are not limited to their membership. Any volunteer performing service in Southern Nevada is eligible for an award.

Two finalists and one winner in each category will be selected by a panel of community leaders. Each winner receives $1,000 for the organization where he or she volunteers; each finalist receives $250. Youth winners receive a $500 donation for their charity of choice, along with a $500 scholarship for higher education.

The awards will be presented at a luncheon on May 2 at the Gold Coast.

CHORAL PROGRAM CONCERT FRIDAY

CSN Henderson campus presents 2008 Cultural Series performances

The College of Southern Nevada's Henderson campus, 700 College Drive, presents a variety of performances for its spring 2008 Cultural Series.

Each free performance will be in C Building, Room 133 on the campus and is followed by a reception. For detailed information, call 651-3000.

The series kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Friday with the College of Southern Nevada Choral Program concert. Mark Wherry conducts. At 7:30 p.m. March 28, professor Gary Solomon will present "Mechanics of Psychiatric Morbidity: The Science and State of Mental Status."

Jazz pianist Tom Ferguson performs with the College of Southern Nevada Jazz Combo in a concert at 7:30 p.m. April 4. Students from the college will present a "Theatre Reading" at 7:30 p.m. on April 18.

The final program in the series is scheduled 7:30 p.m. April 25 when Robert Bonora directs the Calypso Coyote Steel Drum Band.

WOMEN'S AND FAMILY FAIR SATURDAY

Women's History Month events scheduled at community center

March is Women's History Month, and the Arts & Community Events Division of the city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services honors women with special programs on Saturday and March 20 at the East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center.

Admission for both events is free. Call 229-1515 or visit the center, 250 N. Eastern Ave., for more information.

On Saturday, the annual Women's and Family Fair features live entertainment, information booths and seminars with an emphasis on Hispanic women and families. Information is available in both English and Spanish about career planning, education, finance, fashion, Hispanic culture, beauty, health and nutrition. The fair runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is offered with support from local Spanish radio stations.

On March 20, the film "Frida" will be presented as part of the Cine en el Centro film series. Curator Luis Bonilla introduces the film at 6 p.m. and leads a discussion following the screening.

Both film and discussion are in Spanish. "Frida" stars Salma Hayek as artist Frida Kahlo, who lived a bold and uncompromising life as a political, artistic and sexual revolutionary. Married to famed muralist Diego Rivera, Kahlo experienced pain and suffering as well as international recognition as a leading artist of her time.
