First electromagnetic railgun makes its public debut

It’s as if the U.S. military took something from sci-fi lore and turned it into reality.

The first electromagnetic railgun made its public debut at the U.S. Navy’s Science and Technology Expo, Wednesday.

Able to fire a projectile at Mach 7, the railgun uses electromagnetism to manifest energy between two conductive rails and accelerate an object.

The railgun is stronger, faster, and has a much larger range than a normal gun using gunpowder.

The railgun is expected to be equipped on American battleships within the decade, says Chief of Naval Research Rear Admiral Mathias Winters.
