Police substations to collect disposed drugs

People who want to throw away unused or expired prescription drugs can now do so at their local police station, Las Vegas police said Thursday.

The Metropolitan Police Department's 10 substations are now equipped with a secure box for anonymous disposal of the drugs. Police said the initiative is meant to prevent the drugs from being sold illegally, ingested by unauthorized people or from becoming a contamination risk for the water supply.

The grant to pay for the program was made possible by a collaboration with the Clark County Commission and the county's Water Reclamation District.

The area commands are located at:

■ 9850 W. Cheyenne Ave.

■ 3750 Cecile Ave.

■ 750 Sierra Vista.

■ 4860 Las Vegas Blvd. South.

■ 320 N. Moapa Valley, Overton.

■ 1851 Stella Lake Drive.

■ 8445 Eldora Ave. (after opening later this year).

■ 3675 E. Harmon Ave.

■ 6975 W. Windmill Lane.

■ 101 Laughlin Civic Way, Laughlin.
