Men honored with Vegas Dozen Award at local benefit

Entertainer Carlos Santana and former UNLV basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian were among the men honored April 13 during Saks Fifth Avenue's "Vegas Dozen 2011: the Men We Love and Why We Love Them." The party benefited the Nevada Cancer Institute.

The eighth annual event honored 12 men from various professions who have shown personal and professional commitment to our community.

Mari Landers, vice president and general manager of Saks Fifth Avenue at Fashion Show mall, introduced Heather Murren, co-founder and board member of the Nevada Cancer Institute, who spoke about the facility.

Mercedes Martinez of KMXB-FM, 94.1's "Mark and Mercedes in the Morning" show introduced the honorees and described their wardrobe, which was provided by Saks Fifth Avenue Las Vegas.

Besides Santana and Tarkanian, members of the Vegas Dozen 2011 honored were Chet Buchanan, host of KLUC-FM, 98.5's "The Morning Zoo"; Patrick Duffy, patron of the arts; Steven Jackson, St. Louis Rams running back and Eldorado High School alumnus; Neil Moffit, chief executive officer of the Angel Management Group; Myron Martin, president and CEO of the Smith Center for the Performing Arts; Jim Rogers, owner of KSNV-TV, Channel 3; Michael Shulman, philanthropist and founder of ShulmanSays.com; Leonard Stone, attorney with Shook and Stone; John Unwin, CEO of The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas; and Dana White, president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Guests attending were Keith Boman, Jewel Brooks, Jack Libby, Deni and Steve Conrad, Janice Allen, Donna and Sheldon Cloobeck, Patricia and Richard Wright, Nancy Houssels, Shelli Lowe, Barbara Barron, Steven Mack, Julie Murray, Sean Houston, Laura Fritz and Mike Weber, Susan Molasky, Lois Tarkanian, Carolyn Sparks, Terri Eden, Phyllis Schwartz and Nevada Cancer Institute Board Chairman Michael Yackira.

Wild Truffles prepared a buffet, with Southern Wine & Spirits providing the libations. Entertainment was presented by "The Rat Pack Is Back" performers singing tributes to Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin and Joey Bishop.

Other guests included Jodie and Zafi Diamant, Stephanie Youngblood, Eleanore Doumani, Danny Tarkanian, Amanda Hawkins, Debra Hood Smith, Shannon Kirkpatrick and Justin Wright.
