HIKES

Red Rock Canyon: On Monday, learn about the geological features along the Echo Canyon Trail on a moderate, 3-mile hike; for ages 10 and older. On Tuesday, experience a different side of Red Rock on a moderate, 3-mile hike at night along Moenkopi Trail; for ages 12 and older.

Mount Charleston: On Friday, hike along the North Loop trail up to a breezy meadow that offers up a spectacular view of mountain ranges in the distance, returning through a forested canyon once home to a wild horse; 3½ miles; for ages 15 and older.

Around the Bend Friends: This group of people older than 50 and interested in hiking and related social activities plans a three- to four-hour moderate hike each Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. To learn more about the group and the meeting place for the hikes, call 228-0773 or visit the club's website, www.aroundthebendfriends.com.

OTHER PROGRAMS

Red Rock Canyon: On Tuesday, the summer series for children ages 2 to 7 focuses on birds and how they use their beaks. On Wednesday, a tabletop presentation from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. teaches visitors how reptiles survive here. On Friday, help keep Red Rock clean, joining a group to pick up trash from a trail. Also on Friday, learn about Red Rock's hiking trails and trail safety; from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the visitor center classroom. On Saturday, children ages 2 to 7 can learn about the animals of the Mojave Desert. On July 24, a tabletop presentation explores teamwork in the wild, such as coyotes and badgers working together to catch prey. Visitors will learn how they do this and why.

Archaeo-Nevada Society, along with the Bureau of Land Management, seeks volunteers to help with Red Rock Canyon conservation projects. Visit www.archaeonevada.org.
