HIKES
Red Rock Canyon: A moderate three- to four-mile hike around Fossil Ridge. Tuesday, a strenuous eight-mile hike with an elevation gain of 2,600 feet at North Peak. On Thursday, an easy 1½-mile hike. On Friday, a moderate two- to three-mile night hike at First Creek. Also Friday, a 3½-mile moderate hike around the base of Calico Hills. On Saturday, a moderate four-mile hike at Fossil Ridge. On April 18, a four-mile moderately strenuous hike at Rocky Gap Summit (515-5367).
Around the Bend Friends: This group of people over 50, interested in hiking and related social activities, plans a three- to four-hour moderate hike each Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. To learn more about the group and the meeting place for the hike, contact 228-0773, or the club's Web site: www.aroundthebendfriends.com.
OTHER PROGRAMS
Red Rock Canyon: On Friday, a program for 2- to 6-year-olds about the desert tortoise. On Saturday, a program for 2- to 10-year-olds about Red Rock's new outdoor exhibits. Also Saturday, a story time to learn about the Mohave Desert, ongoing every 15 minutes from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the visitor center. On Saturday, the Las Vegas Astronomical Society will have telescopes available to view objects in the sky from 6 to 10:30 p.m. Gates close at 8 p.m. and an entrance fee will be charged. On April 18, a road trip to Rhyolite to learn about what life was like in the ghost town 100 years ago (515-5367).
