Series aims to shed light on black dog theory — PHOTOS

A Boston pet photographer has created the “Black Dogs Project” in response to a conversation he overheard in 2013 about black dogs not being adopted as much as other dogs.

Fred Levy’s photos, which will be released as a book, all feature black dogs on black backgrounds — including some that are from shelters. The series aims to steer away from the theory that black dogs are the last to be adopted and the first to be euthanized, or “Black Dog Syndrome,” Boston.com reported.

Anecdotal evidence has suggested the theory to be true — the same for all animals including cats — but no scientific research has been done on the subject.

Levy said black dogs are often villains in the entertainment industry, citing Harry Potter as an example.

A book featuring 75 of Levy’s photos will be available in September. A portion of the proceeds will go toward black dog rescue.
