Star Catchers to shine in Winchester center show

The Winchester Star Catchers will present their winter recital at 7 p.m. today at the Winchester Cultural Center Theater, 3130 S. McLeod Drive.

The dancers also will collect items to benefit 50 soldiers of the 1st Calvary Division at Fort Hood, Texas. Among the items needed are toiletries, blankets, shower curtains and stuffed animals.

The recital will showcase the youth group of Star Catchers, featuring ages 8 to 17. The adult group, ages 17 and older, will give one performance at the recital.

Tickets for the recital are $5 for adults and $3 for children younger than 12. A $2 discount will be offered for adults donating items.

In other youth news:

* Sierra Vista High School will present its winter band concert featuring two jazz bands with the concert band at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the school theater at 8100 W. Robindale Road. The concert will feature performances of "America the Beautiful," Manheim Steamroller's version of "Silent Night", "Sleigh Ride" and others. The Sierra Vista Orchestra will have its winter concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, with the choir concert set for 7 p.m. Dec. 18. All of the concerts are free and open to the public.

* Las Vegas High School, 6500 E. Sahara Ave., will present its orchestra winter concert in the school theater at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The band winter concert is set for 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the cafeteria and the choir concert will be at 7 p.m. Dec. 18 in the theater. All three concerts are free.

* The Foothill High School Band winter concert will be presented at 7 p.m. Thursday, with the Foothill Holiday Concert featuring the choir and orchestra set for 7 p.m. Dec. 18. Both concerts are free and will be performed in the school theater at 800 College Drive, Henderson.

* Green Valley High School, 460 Arroyo Grande Ave., Henderson, will present its winter orchestra and jazz band concert at 6 p.m. Thursday, while the winter band concert is set for 7 p.m. Dec. 17. Both concerts are free. On Dec. 19, the choir will present its winter concert at 7 p.m. Admission is $2.

n The winter band and orchestra concert for Shadow Ridge High School, 5050 Brent Lane, will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, with the choir and chamber orchestra performing at 6 p.m. Thursday. General admission for the Thursday concert is $5; $3 for students.

* The Las Vegas Day School had its annual Scary Story contest for middle school students in October. The sixth-grade winners are: Madison Santoli, first place; Katherine Gore, second place; and Andrew Brown, third place. The seventh-grade winners are: Madison Moore, first place; Shivani Dixit, second place; and Elias Ruiz, third place. The eighth-grade winners are: Taneisha Figueroa, first place; Natalie Gabriel, second place; and Cody Miner, third place.
