Teen finalist in Prudential Spirit of Community Awards

Allison Knott, a senior at Faith Lutheran Junior/Senior High School has been named a distinguished finalist in the annual Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, which annually honors youth for their volunteerism.
Knott, 17, was selected for establishing the nonprofit organization Horses4Heroes, which provides free horseback lessons and events to children of local community heroes including military personnel, police officers, firefighters, veterans, nurses and special-needs teachers.
Rachael Lambin of Gardnerville and Christine Koski of Reno were named the top two youth volunteers of Nevada.
In other youth news:
* The Science Olympiad Team from Green Valley High School won the high school division at the State Science Olympiad Tournament on March 1.
The team medal winners who will advance to nationals are: Lan Nguyen, Alex Wonnaparhown, Sam Kiki, Param Maroke, Remington Drake, Amy Nunnencamp, Kevin Cheng, Brittany Radke, Ashley Harms, Divya Venkat, Ray Suzuki, Lauren Chao, Eric Glyman, Jessica Hsu and Cliff Moss.
A junior varsity team also competed at the Science Olympiad that was open to students in grades nine to 12.
The national tournament will be in May at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
* The Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth is having a Safe Place Sign Sale through April at all Terrible Herbst convenience stores in Southern Nevada. Sign Sale donations start at $1. Donors will receive a Safe Place sign with their name that will be posted at Terrible Herbst during the campaign.
Safe Place, sponsored by the Terrible Herbst Corp., offers 24-hour emergency assistance to young people who enter a Terrible Herbst convenience store in need of help.
* Members of the Eldorado High School Choir will perform with the Las Vegas Master Chamber Chorale at 4 p.m. Sunday at Christ Episcopal Church, 2100 S. Maryland Parkway. The concert is part of the chorale's community outreach with local high schools. The concert is free, but donations will be accepted for Eldorado's Choral Department.
* Nine young men from the Las Vegas Area Council of the Boys Scouts of America have recently become Eagle Scouts:
Wesley Anderson, 18, is the son of Diana Anderson. He is a member of Troop No. 256.
Zachary Clark, 16, is the son of Michael and Paula Clark. He is a member of Troop No. 749.
Caleb K. Cooper, 15, is the son of Leonard and Susie Cooper. He is a member of Troop No. 335.
James Scott Insley, 17, is the son of JoAnn and James Insley. He is a member of Troop No. 512.
Mathew Michalka, 18, is the son of Paul and Marilyn Michalka. He is a member of Troop No. 133.
Cody Mark Milford, 13, is the son of Mark and Lori Milford. He is a member of Troop No. 188.
Michael Moody, 13, is the son of Mark and Sherrill Moody. He is a member of Troop No. 462.
Alex Proksch, 17, is the son of Eric and Tami Proksch. He is a member of Troop No. 75.
Andrew Villalobos, 18, is the son of Marcelo and Elsa Villalobos. He is a member of Troop No. 160.
