THE LIST: DVDs, CDs and books hitting stores this week

DVDS

"Into the Wild" (R) and "Into the Wild: Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition" (R): This "pulses with the energy of a breakneck road trip through America" in the words of Washington Post critic Ann Hornaday and is a "powerful and poetic hymn to America." Directed by Sean Penn and starring Emile Hirsch, the single-disc edition is extras-free. The two-disc version offers a short on "The Story, the Characters" and one called "The Experience." They're reasonably informative, but at only a little more than a half-hour, you're probably better off getting the cheaper single-disc release.

Also out today: "Awake" (R); "Dr. Doolittle: Tail to the Chief" (PG); "Eleven Men Out" (R); "Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium" (G); "My Kid Could Paint That" (Unrated); "101 Dalmatians: Two-Disc Platinum Edition" (G); "TCM Archives: Forbidden Hollywood Volume 2" (Unrated); and "Things We Lost in the Fire" (R).

CDS

The Gutter Twins, "Saturnalia": They have world-weary voices and their livers are even more well-worn. Mark Lanegan and Greg Dulli are two of the most intoxicating -- and intoxicated -- singers currently haunting the rock 'n' roll underground with tattered hearts and 100-proof baritones. They've collaborated together before in Dulli's excellent Twilight Singers outfit, and now the two have paired up for a full album of smoky, after-dark tunes that are both desperate and seductive in the same breath. This is the soundtrack to long nights and even longer bar tabs.

Also available in stores: Autechre, "Quaristice"; Bauhaus, "Go Away White"; The Black Crowes, "Warpaint"; The BoDeans, "Still"; Jackson Browne, "Solo Acoustic Vol. 2"; Kathleen Edwards, "Asking for Flowers"; Flogging Molly, "Float"; Alan Jackson, "Good Time"; Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, "Real Emotional Trash"; Michael McDonald, "Soul Speak"; Ashton Shepherd, "Sounds So Good"; and The Waifs, "Sundirtwater."

BOOKS

"Change of Heart" by Jodi Picoult: June Nealon's life collides with that of the man condemned to death for killing her daughter, Elizabeth, after the murderer volunteers to donate his heart to Elizabeth's sister who is in need of a transplant.

The best-selling author of "My Sister's Keeper" and "Nineteen Minutes," Picoult's latest novel is filled with anger, regret, love and redemption.

Also hitting shelves: "A Prisoner of Birth" by Jeffrey Archer; "The Silver Swan: A Novel" by Benjamin Black; "The Big Field" by Mike Lupica; "Lush Life" by Richard Price; "Christ the Lord: The Road to Cana" by Anne Rice; "The Ancient" by R.A. Salvatore; and "Dead Time" by Stephen R. White.
