THE LIST: DVDs, CDs and books hitting stores this week

DVDS

"1408: Two-Disc Collector's Edition" (PG-13): John Cusack stars in this scary ghost story about an author who specializes in debunking stories of the paranormal. He checks into a supposedly haunted hotel room and discovers that maybe this room's terror is real. Based on a Stephen King story, it's directed by Mikael Hafstrom ("Derailed") and also stars Samuel L. Jackson. The two-disc edition features an extended director's cut with an alternate ending.

Also out today: "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" (PG); "Bram Stoker's Dracula: Collector's Edition" (R); "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" (G); "The Jungle Book: 40th Anniversary Platinum Edition" (G); "Civic Duty" (R); "Jindabyne" (R); and "Pumpkinhead 4: Blood Feud" (R).

CDS

PJ Harvey, "White Chalk": Feminist fireplug, breathy seductress, bawdy rock queen, curvy provocateur: Polly Jean Harvey is woman, hear her roar.

A grim, stark effort, driven by Harvey's piano playing and her equally delicate and demanding voice, "White Chalk" is an album that swallows the sun and spits out dark sheaths of fractured pop.

As with other Harvey efforts, you won't know whether to shake your fists or shake in your boots.

Also in stores: Brooks & Dunn, "Cowboy Town"; The Cult, "Born Into This"; Dashboard Confessional, "The Shade of Poison Trees"; Celine Dion, "These are Special Times"; Bob Dylan, "Dylan"; John Fogerty, "Revival"; Faith Hill, "The Hits"; Mick Jagger, "The Very Best of Mick Jagger"; Elton John, "Elton 60: Live at Madison Square Garden"; Annie Lennox, "Songs of Mass Destruction"; Matchbox Twenty, "Exile on Mainstream"; New Broadway Cast Recording, "Grease"; Bruce Springsteen, "Magic"; Ike & Tina Turner, "The Ike & Tina Turner Story: 1960-1975"; Frankie Valli, "Romancing the '60s."
