Here are a few things in news and pop culture that we've been talking about lately.

■ Britney Spears gives a surprise performance at the Palms' Rain nightclub. The surprise: Britney came to Las Vegas and didn't impulsively get married, perform a shockingly lethargic show or do something else we'd have to talk about for the next six months.

■ Gourmet food retailer Harry & David files for bankruptcy protection. Fruit of the Month Club subscribers resort to hoarding black market Fruit Roll-Ups.

■ The Bronx Zoo closes its reptile house after a cobra goes missing. Why does this sort of thing never happen in the Bunny House?

■ Southern Nevada gasoline prices inch ever closer to $4 a gallon. Do the spinning numbers on the pump remind anybody else of a particularly greedy slot machine?
