Bruce Scher’s Goodyear closes 13 Las Vegas locations

The Bruce Scher's Goodyear, a car tire and repair shop chain with 13 locations in the Las Vegas area, closed effective Monday because of the death of the chain's owner, Bruce Scher, earlier this month, an area manager for the company said.

About 100 employees were told they were laid off Monday, said Bill Walls, the area manager.

Customers with vehicles at the Bruce Scher's Goodyear locations will receive their vehicles within 48 hours, Walls said.

Enough technicians were retained to finish work orders that began before the announcement of the closings was made, vice president Richard Warburton said.

"It's our interest to take care of all our customers and employees," Warburton said.

Employees will have their final wages available Friday, he said.

"We're trying to make this tough transition as smooth as possible," Walls said.

Walls and Warburton said Scher died in his sleep on the night of Dec. 4 into the morning of Dec. 5. Scher was a Southern Californian who also owned a chain of 17 tire and repair stores in California. Walls said Scher was 56.

The 13 Las Vegas area stores came under a single corporation.

The closings do not affect Riverside, Calif.-based Scher Tire Inc. in Southern California, where those 17 tire and repair stores are located.

Those 17 are under a different corporation, Warburton said.

Walls said he was informed Sunday by his supervisor that all 13 locations in the Vegas Valley would be closed immediately Monday.
