Dining Pick of the Week: Layers Bakery Cafe

PICK OF THE WEEK:

LAYERS BAKERY CAFE

665 S. Green Valley Parkway, 221-2253

When Jeanne and Greg Forrest opened Layers, it was strictly a bakery where Jeanne made traditional pastries from scratch, along with cookies, three-layer round cakes (chocolate, carrot, red velvet, Boston cream, coconut), shortbread, pies, breads (olive oil rosemary, cinnamon raisin, oatmeal molasses, peasant white, French baguette) and wedding cakes. But Layers moved and added a cafe and now that cafe is the center of attention. Breakfast includes stuffed French brioche toast with real maple syrup, bacon and egg pie, sconewich and a breakfast smoothie with organic, low-fat yogurt, granola, banana, peanut butter and vanilla protein powder. Lunch includes house chili made with pulled beef and veggies, Melted Mess (cheddar, Swiss, Havarti) on honey whole wheat, meat loaf and white cheddar on grilled focaccia, garlic and cheese flatbread, ham and artichoke bake, barbecue chicken flatbread, Humble Pot Pie (meat or seafood with vegetables) and noodle pie. Several salads are Autumn house, citrus and Very Green with baby spinach, pears, grapes, sweet onion, goat cheese and toasted almonds in apple cider vinaigrette. Layers is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
