GARDEN OF DREAMS TO HONOR
THOSE WHO MADE STRIDES FOR CIVIL RIGHTS

Palm Downtown Mortuary and Cemetery, 1325 N. Main St., is set to unveil the Garden of Dreams at 11 a.m. Feb. 26, featuring Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman and City Councilman Ricki Y. Barlow. The event is scheduled to feature the Nevada Wing – Civil Air Patrol’s Color Guard and performances by the Las Vegas Mass Choir.

A sentimental and educational garden with a permanent monument to the civil rights movement, the Garden of Dreams aims to help educate the public about the struggles and successes of the journey toward equal rights.

Each year, Palm Downtown Mortuary and Cemetery will reward a local student with a demonstrated commitment to community service and the ideals of freedom, equality and justice with a scholarship to be used at a Nevada institution of higher education.

The Garden of Dreams’ features include a granite torch in the center, oversized granite stars and personalized pavers.

Visitors approach the garden via the Walk of Dreams pavers, which symbolize those who have inspired the ideals of freedom, equality and justice. Funds raised from the sale of the pavers will be used to help pay for the Palm Garden of Dreams Scholarship.

Fourteen polished granite stars, representing the 14th Amendment, will adorn the Civil Rights Plaza floor. Each year, a significant contributor to the civil rights movement will be honored with a dedication.

COCKROACH THEATRE PLANS AUDITIONS
FOR ‘DEATH OF A SALESMAN’

The Cockroach Theatre inside Art Square, 1025 S. First St., is set to host auditions today and Wednesday for its upcoming production of Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Salesman.”

Available slots for today’s auditions are set to start at 5 p.m. and run every half-hour until 8 p.m. Wednesday’s auditions are scheduled to start at 7 p.m. and run every half-hour until 10 p.m. If necessary, callbacks are scheduled for Saturday.

Participants are asked to prepare a contemporary monologue at a maximum length of two minutes.

FREE TESTING, IMMUNIZATIONS
TO BE OFFERED FOR HEPATITIS, HIV

The Community Counseling Center of Southern Nevada and the Southern Nevada Health District are set to offer testing for hepatitis B and C, hepatitis immunizations and free HIV testing from 1 to 6 p.m. every Tuesday and Wednesday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Thursday at the Community Counseling Center, 714 E. REGISTRATION SET THROUGH FEBRUARY
FOR JUNIOR MASTER GARDNER PROGRAM

Registration is open through February for the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s Junior Master Gardener program.

Children will experience hands-on gardening and environmental activities while learning about plants, water, soil, vegetables and more. They will learn to grow healthy foods with an end product they can eat.

In addition, children will learn leadership skills, safety with tools and more.

Children ages 7 to 12 are invited to attend the program. The class meets twice monthly from 8 a.m. to noon. The fee is $50 per semester.

For those who live in the south part of the valley, the classes take place at the Lifelong Learning Center’s Outdoor Education Center, 8050 Paradise Road.

For those who live in the north part of the valley, the classes are planned at the Master Gardener Orchard, 4600 Horse Drive.

At the end of the completed spring semester, children will receive a certificate, a pin and an invitation to attend the second part of the Junior Master Gardener program, set to be offered in the fall.
