Driver detained, released in collision that injured officer

A North Las Vegas motorcycle officer was hospitalized Thursday afternoon in serious condition after a collision with a motorist who was detained on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs.

Police did not identify the male officer but said he was 32 and had been hired seven years ago. The motorist was identified by police as Jalinda Oliver, 24.

North Las Vegas police Sgt. Tim Bedwell said the collision occurred about 5:30 p.m. at Carey Avenue and Commerce Street. The officer was at University Medical Center with nonlife threatening injuries.

Bedwell said the on-duty officer was riding west on Carey. Oliver was driving a 1991 Chevrolet Caprice east on Carey and turned left in front of the motorcycle, police said.

Police said Oliver was taken to the North Las Vegas Detention Center, where she submitted to a mandatory blood draw and was released. Charges against Oliver are pending the investigation , police said.
